Central Barangaroo is the final stage of the Barangaroo urban renewal project on Sydney’s CBD waterfront and is to be developed by Aqualand in partnership with Scentre Group. World-leading in both design and sustainability, it forms part of Australia’s first carbon-neutral precinct and will become one of it’s finest public spaces, with open plazas, commercial buildings and a retail destination surrounded by a new two-hectare park on Sydney Harbour. It represents an exciting opportunity to complete the precinct, and will harmoniously unite the headland and Barangaroo South, while delivering something new for Sydney. Central Barangaroo will be the keystone to the renewal of Barangaroo and will play a significant part in the more extensive revitalisation of the city’s foreshore, providing a setting for engaged city life.

Smart Design Studio is part of a hand-picked team of prominent local and international architectural practices, forming a site-specific Design Excellence Strategy to bring a nuanced understanding of urban design, architecture and placemaking to the precinct. We are working alongside Australia’s Durbach Block Jaggers and John Wardle Architects together with David Chipperfield Architects from the United Kingdom. The premium retail component is to be designed and delivered by Scentre Group. who envisage a lively retail, social and lifestyle destination located at street level and connecting through to the metro concourse below. Offering fashion, dining, entertainment, leisure and technology experiences in a unique setting, the retail destination will cater to visitors and Sydney residents alike.

A new metro station, currently under construction and additional pedestrian links will mean easy access to Central Barangaroo for visitors, residents and workers. With office spaces opening up to the waterfront park, the precinct will set a new benchmark for desirable workplace accommodation, helping to bring people back into the Sydney CBD and further enhancing Barangaroo’s reputation as the most dynamic and appealing commercial precinct in Australia.

Smart Design Studio’s premium-grade atrium office building, located at the gateway to Central Barangaroo, will form part of this campus-style development. We imagine this becoming an exemplar of a modern collaborative workplace of the future – deeply embedded in the context of Hickson Road, with functionality, flexibility and amenity at its core.
