A Colourful Past for Harbour Masters House

The transformation of the Harbour Masters house, built by convicts in 1832 commenced with a briefing that was centred on a Farrow & Ball fan deck. Our clients, who clearly had a passion for bold colour, wanted to invigorate their home with a selection of modern and antique furniture and a brave attitude to colour. Read more

Form has a Function Conversation with Stephen Todd

At the heart of every project we do there lies an idea, a process or a story which drives and completes the design. We love sharing these in our conversation series which provides an insight into our Studio’s creative process. In our latest conversation, William Smart and Glenn O’Loughlin discuss with Stephen Todd whether form and function are still relevant to the making of architecture. Sussex 286 Success

Smart Design Studio have won the Design Excellence Competition for 286 Sussex Street Sydney with a design which focuses on the interplay between Sydney’s historic foundations and the urban reactivation of the site. The winning design for Sussex 286 appropriates the surrounding fabric of the city to create a new brick building with handsome proportions, minimal detailing and distinctive style. The podium contains 147 boutique inner city hotel rooms, as well as ground floor restaurant, retail and shared facilities with the inclusion of 99 luxury apartments in the tower. The proposed form reads as a series of boxes assembled from the finer scales of the surrounding buildings. The building’s concept is Urban Life, and celebrates the intensely urban qualities of this site. The combination of high quality amenity for the hotel and apartment dwellers will make Sussex 286 an exceptional place to live, work and experience. Read more

SIX ROOMS INTO ONE

Good things come in small packages. With simplicity and elegance the design of this space cleverly incorporates six rooms into one. Kitchen, dining, living, study, bathroom and laundry, all of which were once an awkward warren of small rooms at the rear of this Victorian terrace house, have been transformed into a beautifully modern kitchen and living space. The end result opens up the house to the courtyard garden with a seamless transition between inside and out. More on the Chapple Residence here. Read more

Maxwell ( Smart) Launch

The latest stage of Mirvac’s Harold Park development, Maxwell Place, was successfully launched this weekend. Conceived of as a promontory, the building’s angled façade of sheer vertical walls and layered horizontal slabs draws inspiration from its location between the park and a spectacular sandstone cliff. Smart Design Studio’s approach is to create buildings where the interiors and architecture are seamlessly integrated together; here the concept extends inside each apartment through a palette of materials detailed to reference the rockface. Construction will commence shortly with completion scheduled for late 2016. Read more
