Pipi is coastal luxe in the heart of Bondi: a beautifully-sculpted residential and retail building. Comprising 29 apartments atop ground floor retail, the grand vertical bays that line Hall Street are swooping architectural gestures, both captivating and classical. The façades are a study in folded planes and angled blades, a changing play of light falling across pale surfaces. An external material palette with sun-bleached tones of light-grey concrete, white terracotta and brick: durable materials that will weather beautifully in their context.
The apartments look out onto the ocean and surrounding coastal hills; delicate curved blade screens protect balconies and interiors from the elements and neighbouring buildings.
Views from the highest level of the building form a spectacular backdrop to the penthouse interiors. Spaces are anchored by sculptural elements both bold and beautiful and connected by delicate materials and soft tones, Waxed plaster finishes on walls and ceilings in living areas are complemented by luxurious marble tiled walls in the bathrooms and naturally flowing travertine floors.
The internal finishes borrow the tonal qualities of the exterior, with off-form light-grey concrete ceilings, chalk-coloured floor tiles and whitewashed timber stairs. Myrtle flame timber veneer joinery and terracotta tiles add a sense of nature in the bathrooms.
The project uses concrete as a feature of the façade and internal spaces. Low carbon concrete was selected for it’s environmental benefits and lighter grey colour to suit the coastal material palette. This is a building that sits comfortably at the junction of urban and beach living.
