Sussex 286 Success

Smart Design Studio have won the Design Excellence Competition for 286 Sussex Street Sydney with a design which focuses on the interplay between Sydney’s historic foundations and the urban reactivation of the site. The winning design for Sussex 286 appropriates the surrounding fabric of the city to create a new brick building with handsome proportions, minimal detailing and distinctive style. The podium contains 147 boutique inner city hotel rooms, as well as ground floor restaurant, retail and shared facilities with the inclusion of 99 luxury apartments in the tower. The proposed form reads as a series of boxes assembled from the finer scales of the surrounding buildings. The building’s concept is Urban Life, and celebrates the intensely urban qualities of this site. The combination of high quality amenity for the hotel and apartment dwellers will make Sussex 286 an exceptional place to live, work and experience. More on Sussex 286 here.

SIX ROOMS INTO ONE

Good things come in small packages. With simplicity and elegance the design of this space cleverly incorporates six rooms into one. Kitchen, dining, living, study, bathroom and laundry, all of which were once an awkward warren of small rooms at the rear of this Victorian terrace house, have been transformed into a beautifully modern kitchen and living space. The end result opens up the house to the courtyard garden with a seamless transition between inside and out. More on the Chapple Residence here.
