The renovation of a Victorian terrace house in Sydney’s Forest Lodge resulted in a beautifully modern kitchen and living space. The architectural response was a pared-back design using simple materials and a striking palette of black and white. The reimagined dwelling opens onto the courtyard garden creating a seamless transition between inside and out.
Expand ContentThe walls are lined with blackened ash veneer panels which cut and fold around the corner, dramatically blurring the boundaries of the efficient space. The success of this design solution lies in combining the kitchen and living room and concealing the numerous fixtures and fittings. This hereby moves the emphasis of the room onto form, materials and detail rather than functional equipment.
Externally mounted aluminium sliding doors allow the living room to be opened up to the garden without sacrificing space. The concrete floor of the inside is matched outside, creating a greater sense of spaciousness and an enhanced connection between inside and out.
