SDS married new and existing geometries to transform a Federation house with an overscale top addition into an elegant cohesive form. In doing so the house now reads as an assemblage of intersecting gable roofs with a coastal aesthetic.
Expand ContentLocated in Clovelly, the existing house had a challenging orientation, a plethora of small dark rooms and views limited to the south. The clients wanted to bring in light, maximise the views and move towards open plan living where possible. A new extension enabled a bright and airy kitchen and dining room with a deck at ground level, plus a generous light-filled primary bedroom above.
Sustainability is an important part of any brief, and maximising the parts of the house to be retained was our first sustainability move. This was complemented by considered passive and active ESD features throughout.
Effectively creating a reverse brick veneer home, materials, such as compressed fibre cement, were chosen to weather the coastal location. Large expanses of glass and outdoor terraces connect interior and exterior spaces and a pared back interior focusses the attention to the ocean view.
