Converting Sydney’s legendary Taxi Club into offices for boutique agency, Oxford Real Estate, the project required an extensive upgrade to the structure and services of the 850m2 base building. New awnings, bathrooms, a rooftop terrace, and modern shopfront windows were also required, as were desking and storage to allow the agency to transition and grow.
Expand ContentAs a deep terrace building, the only opportunities for natural light were the long sides adjoining neighbouring buildings, the short ends, and the roof. To introduce colour and light to the centre, a bespoke, round LED pendant light was coupled with colourful joinery. These elements create a wonderful juxtaposition to the raw, whitewashed, exposed structure of the existing building, and the other new elements inserted into the space including desks, panelling and Bolon flooring, all of which are black.
Sustainability and budget objectives led to the maximum retention of the existing building, such as the existing stair and lift. It also created an honest fit out, where the budget was focused on the important areas, thus resonating with the corporate values of Oxford Real Estate.
The outside of the building is strong yet sophisticated. Painted all white, with bronze steel trims and details, it commands attention without being strident. Its elegant presentation, coupled with the openness to the street, has been a positive addition to the wide and busy Flinders Street.
