Designed by Smart Design Studio with Mirvac, The Moreton encompasses urban design, architecture and interiors. Situated in Bondi, the 1.67ha development is made up of a family of buildings with a unique identity forming a courtyard around Scarba House. Respect for the urban context and existing heritage listed house drove the design of 191 apartments with associated car parking, servicing and common areas. The success of the project is how it nestles between the neighbouring buildings to frame a new green square, with the heritage-listed home at the centre.
Expand ContentThe predominant material is raked joint painted brickwork, referencing the inter-war, art deco and 1970s apartment buildings of Waverley. This is complimented by painted in situ concrete and striking forms. The palette is restrained to be animated by light and shade, providing a fresh contrast when viewed through the tree canopy.
The new green square setting is open to the public creating a small park for the local community. A series of smaller courtyards and gardens link the buildings, allowing solar access, natural cross-ventilation and outdoor circulation routes.
Buildings that surround Scarba House adopt a contemporary but classic style comprising of vertically orientated openings, V-blade walls, simple painted bricks and metal balustrades. Elements are ordered, repeated and restrained to be subservient to the listed home.
An eight storey building fronts Ocean Street, which is similar in scale to the neighbouring buildings. Stepping down in height from there, a six storey building forms the spine of the precinct, framing the central garden, while three two storey terraces border Dickson Park, under the generous fig trees.
